9 The Heinrich-Heine-Park

So named in 1956 to commemorate the centenary of the death of the poet Heinrich Heine, this 3.6 ha park occupies the site of a medieval quarry and later a vineyard. Around 1820 August Gottlieb Eberhardt, a writer from Halle,

began work on building a house in rural style with a Romantic park, which, after changing ownership, was redesigned with a Temple to the Muses, a panoramic tower, a decorative pond and, for fun, confusingly laid out pathways, by the banker Ludwig Lehmann from 1870 onwards. It was made partially accessible to the public in 1935 and the whole park has been open to the public since 1945. A further thoroughgoing change of design was undertaken 1960-66: an entrance from Burgstrasse, a new system of pathways, a children’s playground, steps down to the bank of the river Saale, view points and a partial renewal oft the stock of trees, while maintaining such old ones as red-leaved beeches to draw special attention. The park is also a worthy home to sculptures created during the 5th International Sculptors’ Symposium in Halle in 1996.
