6 The Saline
Founded in 1722, the Saline, where salt was panned from
brine wells was still in use up to 1964. It is now a museum

around 1720 have survived to the present: an old one-storey
gabled house with a little tower as well as a panning
hall with its tall chimney. The latter houses an exhibition
documenting the more than 1000 year long history of salt
extraction in Halle up to the final demise of the industry
in 1964. The museum, founded in 1967, presents selected
documents and objects which afford the visitor an insight
into the way the work was carried out, along with the
customs of the members of the salt panners' guild, the
Halloren. A particular attraction is a regular demonstration
of the salt panning, during which the Halloren guild's
silver, consisting of around 80 artistically valuable
cups, is partially on display. The finger of land on which
the Saline stands was converted into a recreation area
in 1967 with to swimming pools.
