11 The Hallmarkt with the Göbel fountain
West from the Market Square, immediately behind the
church, is the Hallmarkt square, once the economic heart
of the city. West from the Market Square, immediately
behind the church,
|
is the Hallmarkt square, once
the economic heart of the city. The old salt panning on
the "Halle" was abandoned here in 1868. As late
as autumn 1996 the place where once "Hall", salt,
was produced, was used as a car park, surrounded by buildings
which mostly date back to 1886-90 but include also among
the finest on the southern side the impressive main seat
of the city library. The pseudo-romanesque construction
at the back of the church was built to house electric transformers
in 1924. Now the square is a focus for culture and communication
well served by buses and trams.
A fountain inaugurated in 1998 attracts many people not
only to view it but also to pass their time there. This
work by the local sculptor Prof. Bernd Göbel reflects
the history of the city: eight bronze figures represent
legends and historical events from medieval Halle; that
of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, with mistress, causing
nationwide controversy - see it for yourself!
